INSTRUCTOR’S RECAP

November 4, 2010

About the October 28, 2010 Class Session

General Overview

Thank you for your active participation while reviewing the course work on Pictorial Modernism, Heroic Realism and Propaganda Imagery last Thursday.

I have reviewed your Process Books and have recorded the points on Moodle. I view these books as “a work in progress” –so you may update the content of your book pages to up your points if you wish. I will talk about how to do this in class on the November 4th.

Next Week

Next week I would like to start the class with a review and discussion of what you are considering doing for your final project. I will collect your project proposal summary after this discussion. You were to choose one of the three assignments below as your final project.

1. A research paper or presentation that compares two illustrators’ lives, subject matter and styles.

2. A research paper or presentation that documents the growth of a prominient illustrator’s style and work.

3. The creation of artwork that immitates a particular illustrator or style and a presentation of the process of the artwork.

We will then move onto looking at the topic of Children’s Book Illustrations. At 3:00 p.m. Jim Ratliff our librarian will visit the class to talk about the topic research and introduce the research sources in our library in Anna Whiten Hall.

Homework:

1. The homework is to write a summary of what you intend to do for your final project.

For the class session next week:

1. Bring your class supplies with you.

Looking forward to seeing you in class next Thursday – class will start at 1:30 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

About the October 21, 2010 Class  Session

Murray Kimber: Contemporary illustrator who uses the Art Deco Style

General Overview

Thank you for your active participation while reviewing the course work on Thursday. The Expressionism work of Käthe Kollwitz was a somber and heavy way to start the class –but your reactions to her work was exactly what she wanted to visually communicate to her viewers.

Murray Kimber’s illustration above does well to visually communicate the themes and motifs of the “Art Deco” style: Man-made industrialization; cubistic influence; product oriented; spot lighted skies; the use of complementary colors; bold, heavy typography; etc.

Next Week

Next week I would like to start the class with a review and discussion of what you were able to find regarding the Art Deco style. In addition to using the two links of RICHARD SOLOMAN and SHANNON ASSOCIATES try contacting our Librarian, Jim Ratliff  (jratliff@kvcc.edu) to help in your research –and, of course, using “google” to find resources. We will then move onto looking at the topic of Heroic Realism and illustrations used in propaganda posters.

If you would like me to take a look at your process notebooks just to give you any suggestions come and visit during office hours or e-mail me for an appointment (lrzoska@kvcc.edu). Your process books are due to be handed in on October 28th for 33% of your final grade.

Final Project Information

Please start thinking about what you will be doing for your final project for this class. You may choose one of the three assignments below as your final project. A project proposal will be due November 4 summarizing what you intend to do as a final project.

1. A research paper or presentation that compares two illustrators’ lives, subject matter and styles.

2. A research paper or presentation that documents the growth of a prominient illustrator’s style and work.

3. The creation of artwork that immitates a particular illustrator or style and a presentation of the process of the artwork.

Homework:

1. Find 5  illustrations from the Art Deco style that we did not look at in class, they can be from 5 different illustrators –this will mean that you will have to do some independent research. Be prepared to present an overview and description of what you found to the class, including the name of the illustrators.

2. Make copies by either printing them from the web, / scan and print or photocopy from books.

3. Adhere these (glue stick, paste, tape, etc.) into your “process book”.

a. It would be to your advantage to write down the illustrator’s name and the title of the illustrations under (or near) each illustration.

For the class session next week:

1. Bring your class supplies with you.

2. To better prepare for the next class session I recommend you read the information in your textbook on the style of Heroic Realism  (pages 78 – 79), and the form of Propaganda (pages 210 – 213).

Looking forward to seeing you in class next Thursday – class will start at 1:30 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

About the October 7, 2010 Class Session

General Overview

Well –in the past five weeks we have looked at over 500 illustrations and learned about 50 illustrators and the ten categories and styles of:

1. Introductory Illustrators

2. Victorian Era

3. Fantasy Illustration

4. Golden Age of Illustration

5. Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

6. Brandywine School

7. Realism

8. Arts and Crafts

9. Art Nouveau

10.The Object Poster

This material we have covered will serve as a solid foundation as we move forward into the more modern illustration styles. To help all of you to have the time to develop an understanding of this material from the past 5 weeks I believe we should take a class period to emphasize what we have covered up to now.

Next Week

Next week we will be doing several class exercises –one in particular involves some research so I have arranged for the laptop cart to be available for our class.

I will start looking at your process notebooks just to see how you are doing with them and to give you any suggestions if needed. Your process books are due to be handed in on October 28th for 33% of your final grade.

About the September 30, 2010 Class Session

Another good class yesterday –and thank you for your input regarding the class structure. I’m looking forward to hear more of your ideas and concepts about it.

At the end of class, I asked you to think about this question (see below) please roll it over in your mind and be prepared to discuss this with your group next Thursday.

1. What are the major differences you see in the subject matter and style of the “Realism” illustrators of Steven Dohanos/Norman Rockwell compared to Coby Whitmore?

Next week we will start with group work and a discussion regarding the above question and then move onto looking at the illustrators of the Arts & Crafts Style, the Art Nouveau Style,  and the concept of the “Object Poster”.

Homework:

1. Select one of the illustrators we reviewed in class and find 5 of their illustrations that were not displayed in class.

2. To better prepare for the next class session I recommend you read the information in your textbook on the Arts & Crafts style (pages 26 – 27), the Art Nouveau style (pages 29 – 35) and the Object Poster (pages 36 – 41).

STUDENT COMMENTS

October 1, 2010

Class Structure

Please post your comments regarding your thoughts on the ANM 101 History of Illustration class structure. We have many illustrators to review as well  as many illustration styles to learn about. I would like to make some room during class time for more group work and discussion -but I want to make sure that the group work and discussions stay meaningful and relevant.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts about this topic.
