INSTRUCTOR’S RECAP

October 10, 2010

About the October 7, 2010 Class Session

General Overview

Well –in the past five weeks we have looked at over 500 illustrations and learned about 50 illustrators and the ten categories and styles of:

1. Introductory Illustrators

2. Victorian Era

3. Fantasy Illustration

4. Golden Age of Illustration

5. Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

6. Brandywine School

7. Realism

8. Arts and Crafts

9. Art Nouveau

10.The Object Poster

This material we have covered will serve as a solid foundation as we move forward into the more modern illustration styles. To help all of you to have the time to develop an understanding of this material from the past 5 weeks I believe we should take a class period to emphasize what we have covered up to now.

Next Week

Next week we will be doing several class exercises –one in particular involves some research so I have arranged for the laptop cart to be available for our class.

I will start looking at your process notebooks just to see how you are doing with them and to give you any suggestions if needed. Your process books are due to be handed in on October 28th for 33% of your final grade.

Class Comments

Again, thank you for your input regarding the class structure –its not too late to comment. And I’m looking forward to hear if you thought class session 5 was an improvement or not.

Final Project Information

Now is a good time to start thinking about what you will be doing for your final project for this class. You may choose one of the three assignments below as your final project. A project proposal will be due November 4 summarizing what you intend to do as a final project.

1. A research paper or presentation that compares two illustrators’ lives, subject matter and styles.

2. A research paper or presentation that documents the growth of a prominient illustrator’s style and work.

3. The creation of artwork that immitates a particular illustrator or style and a presentation of the process of the artwork.

Homework:

1. Select one of the illustrators we reviewed in class and find 5 of their illustrations that were not displayed in class.

2. Make copies by either printing them from the web, / scan and print or photocopy from books.

3. Adhere these (glue stick, paste, tape, etc.) into your “process book”.

a. It would be to your advantage to write down the illustrator’s name and the title of the illustrations under (or near) each illustration.

For the class session next week:

1. Bring your class supplies with you.

2. To better prepare for the next class session I recommend you review you notes from the past 5 weeks and review the images posted on this blog from the past 5 weeks.

Looking forward to seeing you in class next Thursday – class will start at 1:30 p.m. Please plan accordingly.
